Summary

The history books say I died.

They don’t know the half of it.

Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them . . . and he’s hunted Romanov before.

Nastya’s only chances of survival are to either release the spell, and deal with the consequences, or enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya’s never dabbled in magic before, but it doesn’t frighten her as much as her growing attraction for Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her . . .

That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.

REVIEW

“Why won’t you die?”

“Because I have a story I was meant to live. And not even you can unwrite it.”

— Nadine Brandes, Romanov

Nadine Brandes’ book Fawkes has been on my ‘to-be-read’ shelf for ages, I read the blurb and found it interesting enough to click the want to read button on Goodreads, but never got around to it. Now, Romanov was a completely different story – after reading the blurb, I knew I needed it in my hands the moment it came out, preferably in hardcover because that cover art is stunning!

I grew up watching the Disney adaptation of Anastasia, and I remember being engrossed in the show. The type of engrossed that meant I would be upset whenever my grandmother came to get me for dinner. So I went into this book with pretty high expectations.

What I really enjoyed about this book was that it was told in two different parts: before and after the Romanov executions. I think that was what made this book for me. We got to know the Romanov family, the author let us feel the pain they went through when they were exiled, and even though I knew it was coming the execution still left a gaping hole in my heart.

Anastasia ‘Nastya’ Romanov was the heroine I needed to read about; she was feisty, complex, loyal and strong-willed in a way that I haven’t seen in books for ages. Her drive, the will she had to protect her family, the way she pushed herself to be more for them. The way she learned from her father to love, forgive, and be humble – regardless of their circumstances.

I loved every second of this book, it was a shorter read than most books, but that was refreshing because not once did this plot seem rushed, or too slow. Oh, did I mention there’s magic? Yep, what’s a good historical fiction without some magic!

I’m going to touch lightly on the romance in this book, because there was romance but it was never over-powering, and so extremely slow burning. I loved how Nastya and Zash started off on different sides of a coin, not understanding each other and then just as things are going good, Nastya finds herself on the other side of a firing squad with Zash’s finger on the trigger of a gun aimed at her. Most importantly, for those of you who are concerned, the romance is clean.

There is violence and blood, but none of it was overdone – sure it was difficult to picture in your head, because of how much you come to love the characters, but it was still realistic.

Four and a half stars from me, what a magical way to start the day! I look forward to reading more of the author’s work in the near future.

Happy reading,
Francine

Summary

For two sworn enemies, anything can happen during the Hawaiian trip of a lifetime—maybe even love—in this romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling authors of Roomies.

Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion . . . she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there’s a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo.

Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is . . . Olive doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be.

REVIEW

I’m not even kidding when I say that I was literally counting down the day until this book released, and as expected – I got myself a copy the moment it was out in the world.

Without diving too much into the plot, this story follows Olive and Ethan as they take their sibling’s place on a honeymoon to Maui. Even though Olive and Ethan are “sworn enemies”, even they wouldn’t pass on a free vacation to the land of white sandy beaches and mai tais. All they had to do with pretend to act the part of a newly wedded couple, sounds simple, right? What could possibly go wrong?

After reading young adult fantasy for so long, I just wanted to sit back and read a book that was not only easy on my mind, but would give me butterflies. The Unhoneymooners delivered on all fronts.

It was light and fluffy, and made me laugh out loud so many times! The chemistry between Olive and Ethan is insane. I mean, I don’t know if I was high on Christina Lauren release day fumes, but this book made me giddy all the way through. The banter was a whole other thing in itself – I loved it! I soaked up every ounce of the glorious banter between Ethan and Olive.

There was something about Olive that I absolutely loved – she was down to earth, funny as all hell, and sassy – oh the latina sass really made this book THAT much better for me.

Usually, I don’t pay attention to secondary characters in romances, but I was so in love with Olive’s family – her mom, her cousin, her sister, hell if she had a dog and cat that couldn’t speak I would’ve loved them too. They’re funny, and “broken” in all the best ways – and by that, I mean that life has thrown them curveballs, and they are the way they are because of it. Another thing I feel like I should mention is how supportive they are (in their own ways) towards each other – it really struck home for me and reminded me of my own family.

I could also relate to Olive in so many ways. This was just the book I needed to not feel so alone and somewhat lost, and it inspired me the way other books haven’t been able to do in oh-so long.

For that, I’m giving this one four and a half stars. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for an easy read, or just something to make your heart pound in your chest and to set those butterflies loose in your stomach.

Happy reading,

Can’t Wait Wednesday: I Can’t Wait For Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Can't Wait Wednesday

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books that we’re excited about and have yet to read. The idea is based on Waiting on Wednesday, which was previously hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Oh would you look at that? Look who’s missed several CWW’s in a row… again. I’m back again, sorry guys! I’ve been busy with other commitments, and to be honest finding the time to sit and write out a blog post has been really difficult recently – hell, I’m still catching up on reviews from three weeks ago!

My choice for this week’s CWW is a YA Fantasy that caught my attention because I’ve heard it’s rather romance heavy (which I am all here for!) and is reminiscent of A Court of Mist and Fury, which – in case you did not know – is one of my all time favourite books!

Summary

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

This is Shelby Mahurin’s debut novel, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us all! I love, love, love witches so this is super high on my TBR, now if only September would come around sooner, that would be the icing on this cupcake.

Review: Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer

Summary

A forbidden romance.

A deadly plague.

Earth’s fate hinges on one girl . . .

CINDER, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She’s reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s sudden illness. But when her life becomes entwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she finds herself at the centre of a violent struggle between the desires of an evil queen – and a dangerous temptation.

Cinder is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Now she must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth’s future.

This is not the fairytale you remember. But it’s one you won’t forget.

REVIEW

I’m going to start this off by saying that dystopia and/or sci-fi books are so far out of my comfort zone, and I’ve avoided them like the plague for ages. But after a billion recommendations from people over various platforms, I caved and borrowed a copy of Cinder from my local library. I think it’s fair to say that I fell in love with this book, its characters, and the world that Marissa Meyer has created.

Cinder is the best mechanic in New Beijing, a city with a plague problem that takes the lives of many shortly after infection, with no cure in sight. The crowned prince, Kai, *swoon for days* comes to her for help fixing an android that his royal mechanics can’t seem to fix. From there the plot thickens with the arrival of an evil queen, secret agendas, and a war between Earth and the Lunar colony.

I really enjoyed the author’s twist on the classic fairytale, Cinderella, and while there is romance in this book – it does not overpower the fantastic plot, which ends on a complete cliffhanger by the way. And may or may not have left my heart in pieces on the floor.

Cinder was an excellent start to the Lunar Chronicles and dare I say this might be the series to convert me into a sci-fi lover! The next book in the series looks absolutely amazing, and I cannot wait to start reading it.

Summary

What if you almost missed the love of your life?

Nadia gets the 7.30 train every morning without fail. Well, except if she oversleeps or wakes up at her friend Emma’s after too much wine.

Daniel really does get the 7.30 train every morning, which is easy because he hasn’t been able to sleep properly since his Dad died.

One morning, Nadia’s eye catches sight of a post in the daily paper:

To the cute girl with the coffee stains on her dress. I’m the guy who’s always standing near the doors… Drink sometime?

So begins a not-quite-romance of near-misses, true love, and the power of the written word.

A fabulous feel-good romance for fans of Holly Bourne and Dolly Alderton.

REVIEW

Note: A massive thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

I wanted to put this book aside for a day that I could just sit and binge read the entire thing. That day came yesterday, and boy was I glad.

Our Stop is about Nadia who misses her morning train, and happens to be on the same train as our male protagonist, Daniel. In a change of pace, Daniel doesn’t feel comfortable approaching her – and so he decides to write into the local news “Missed Connections” column.

This was an easy read with strong female protagonists, and several laugh-out-loud moments. I truly enjoyed this story and the characters that Laura Jane Williams created are adorable and relatable. The writing was strong and kept me captivated throughout.

A great debut novel! I would recommend this to anyone looking for an easy, cute as all heck read.

Happy reading,

So I obviously struggled a little with my fantasy reads this month, hence the fact I have more romances on this list than fantasies, but I’m hoping this will change this month. I’ve got so many fantasy books on my TBR cart that I’m going to make it a point to make this month a good reading month for the genre.

On a separate note, who’s ready for a ton of good releases this month? I know I am and I’m hoping my bank account agrees.

Here’s to a good month of reading!

Much love,
Francine
